And it doesn't just make it worse\u2014in some cases, it can be the main trigger.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress triggers a series of mechanisms in the body that directly affect the skin:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased cortisol (the stress hormone)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased oil production in the skin<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disruption of the immune system<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this creates the perfect environment for acne to develop.<\/span><\/p><p><strong>WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENS TO THE SKIN?<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you're under prolonged stress, your body goes into \u201calert\u201d mode. This causes:<\/span><\/p><p><b>1. Increased sebum production<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sebaceous glands become active \u2192 the skin becomes oilier \u2192 the pores become clogged.<\/span><\/p><p><b>2. Inflammation<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress promotes inflammation \u2192 pimples become redder, more painful, and last longer.<\/span><\/p><p><b>3.
